Local Media Taking Bribes in Support of the Stadium Tax

In the film Goodfellas, there is a great scene in which the main character Henry Hill watches his buddies beat the shit out of a Postman in order to protect one of their scams. After the incident Hill recalls, "How could I go to school after that and pledge allegiance and sit through good government bullshit?"

There is a certain point in everyone's life where they have to grow up and realize that much of what they've been taught is a lie. Wars are fought for money, real estate and oil but mainly money and not freedom or democracy. There is no such thing as equality and the Civil Rights Movement was lead by a great man who was also a philanderer and probably a plagiarist as well. Most of the Founding Fathers owned slaves and the most notable one who didn't (Benjamin Franklin) was a pervert and screwed the same hooker as his son. And your grandmother's cooking isn't really that good and it's probably part of what killed your Grandfather.

These realizations are important because they are part of what makes us adults. An adult knows that the besides the flag waving and the commitment to the troops and all of the empty rhetoric, the War in Iraq is lost. Additionally, an adult knows that every construction project in Kansas City has been nothing more than an exercise in corruption and graft since the days of Pendergast.

Recently, a bitter rivalry between two sports radio stations has revealed that the group supporting the Stadium Tax has made several payments to employees of Entercom's 610 sports station that claims to be "a fan's best friend" and is seemingly on good terms with Lamar Hunt and David Glass as well seeing as how they have endlessly supported the Stadium Tax, hosted images of the project on their page and talked up the benefits of the rolling roof rip-off in between every commercial break during some of their "sponsored" remote broadcasts.

Clearly, sports radio 810 might have struck the death blow in this match-up.

It was mentioned on a local message board that reportedly, Soren Petro and the folks at 810 initially mentioned all the sports talkers at KCSP-610 who have taken money from the pro-stadium group by matching up names from the expense report filed with the Missouri Ethics Commission.

According to one of my favorite tipsters, 610 has already released some kind of flimsy apology that I'm sure doesn't admit to any liability and in the coming days it will be interesting to find out who else is on the payroll of the push to pass the Stadium Tax.

The important thing is that all of these bribes (or whatever they want to call the payoffs) are indicative of the sleaze, dishonesty and unfairness of the Stadium Tax. This is the work of billionaire owners planting seed money in order to have the talking heads in this town sing their praises and convince the people of Kansas City to help them get richer. Not only is this reason enough to vote against the Stadium Tax but should also convince everyone that professional sports in this city does nothing but corrupt local media, beat down local skanks and provide entertainment for the rich JoCo jerks across the State Line.

Clearly, if these are the sleazy tactics of the pro sports teams in order to get their money then it's clearly no big loss if they are forced to leave the city and hopefully take their whore cheerleaders with them.

The attack is on. Today's Star has both a front page "story" praising the tax and an unsigned editorial, painting a gloom and doom scenario if the tax fails. Isn't Entercom the group that bought up all the local radio stations, then moved them to Kansas?

scathing commentary Tony. I wish I could be as 'anti-development' in regards to the new stadium projects in my backyard.

to be honest, I wear 'home' and 'away' NYJets underpants

Tony,

I can't comment on the stadium deal because I don't live in KC, but...

Cynicism is death to the soul. My God, to read your commentary (which was articulately written, no doubt) you'd think the sky is falling and there's nothing more to do but slit our wrists! Don't succumb to this defeatist, "everything is wrong, corrupt and evil" mentality. It's just so typically... Democrat! :)

I have mixed feelings about the stadium issue. I'm not a Jackson County resident, but I'd like to see a downtown baseball stadium. At the same time, I don't believe building a new park would be cheaper downtown and however small the risk, the inability of county politicians to come up with workable solutions over the last decade leave me dubious to believe a new and better deal will get done in the future.

What I find indisputable is the fact that both proponents and opponents are butchering the presentation so poorly that it may spoil the water for this proposal and any proposal to come.

The renovation supporters have managed to run one of the most inept marketing campaigns in city history by rolling out a new nugget a day. A Super Bowl! An All Star Game! A possible Final Four!

All of these would be great things, but the way they've been introduced with all the behind the scenes maneuvering has been schlock.

Opponents, led by Kevin Kietzman posing as Joan of Arc, are equally as disgusting. Kevin wants everyone to believe he only wants what's best for the little people of this fair city. He quotes facts and figures that are irrefutable only because anyone attempting to refute them is shouted down by his incessant screaming. He quotes the cost to each family in the county as being close to $3,800 but where are those figures coming from and why are they to be believed over others? Because Joan, er Kevin says so. Why are new stadium costs going to be cheaper? Because Kevin says so.

Just the other day he apparently got his architect and engineeering licenses considering how he belittled every comment made by the architect who originally designed the stadiums. Yes, only the King of KC media ego knows what's right for the rest of us.

Kietzman whines about how his stand is hurting Union Broadcasting business. Should you or I care? If he wants to take a stand, take it, don't whine about the consequences. He constantly tells his listeners to speak with their pocketbooks. I guess that means many business owners who disagree with him are doing so by putting their money where his mouth is. Good for them. They have a right to speak out as well.

I'll go see games whether they're in a renovated sports complex, downtown or at the speedway. If asked to pay tax money for it in Johnson County, I'll do so gladly. My only hope it that I have games to go see in Kansas City in the years to come.
