Heart of America
Recent cuts at Truman Medical Center are indicative of the slash and burn stupidity championed by Missouri’s boy king/Governor Matt “Baby” Blunt.
Chief among the cuts is an initiative to curtail medical treatment to undocumented workers. However, citizens of the surrounding area will also be affected after the millions of dollars worth of services are withheld.
And this is where politics should become unimportant. It’s simply a matter of human rights and self preservation. Hasn’t Governor Blunt learned that AIDS, bacterial meningitis, polio, malaria and all of the plagues throughout time have taught humanity that sickness in one place affects us all?
One way or another, some undocumented worker or maybe someone who needed indigent care might be making your kid’s happy meal someday. Wouldn’t you feel better knowing that worker was vaccinated against TB? A balanced budget won’t comfort you when a person who can’t afford medical care has used the restroom before you, coughed on you at the mall, left the bathroom doorknob wet when you went to use it or passes out at the wheel in the oncoming lane.
Cutting medical care for people who can’t afford it is akin to cutting their throat. Capitalist imperative, budget woes, Horatio Alger, fuck all . . . Everyone has the right to live. People who need medical services should get them; anything less is vindictive politics put into practice against the very people that elected officials claim to represent.
